A longtime local golf course is set for its final rounds in the coming weeks as its owners continue to search for a buyer.

Mill Quarter Plantation Golf Club, a public daily fee course in Powhatan, will cease operations on Nov. 4.

The closure comes months after Mill Quarter’s owners, the Daniels family, announced they were under contract to sell the 307-acre property to an unnamed local developer, leaving the fate of the 50-year-old course up in the air.

While that deal has since fallen through, the Danielses are moving forward with the closure, according to an announcement on Mill Quarter’s website.

The last day for public play is Oct. 31. The final rounds for members will be played Nov. 4.

Mill Quarter’s recent closure announcement.

Diane Daniels, the widow of Mill Quarter founder David Daniels, first announced the previous pending deal in a letter to the community on June 9. “After 52 wonderful years, the Daniels family has made the difficult decision to sell the course,” the letter stated at the time. “[T]he future of the course, whether it will continue as a golf facility or be developed for housing, rests with the new owner …”

But with that deal no longer the table, the status of any pending deals for the golf course’s land is unclear. Daniels did not return calls seeking comment.

The club’s general manager Mark Chambers declined to comment when reached last week.

David Daniels founded the course in 1974, and it was most recently run by his son, David Patrick Daniels. But after both men passed away last year, the family was no longer able to continue to operate the course and decided to put it up for sale.

The Mill Quarter property, for now, is owned by Mill Quarter Development Corp., which is tied to the Daniels family. Its holdings include the golf course’s 307 acres, as well as an additional 68 acres adjacent to the course and the Links of Mill Quarter residential neighborhood.

The land is all zoned R-2, which allows for single-family residential development, and was most recently assessed by the county at a combined $1.7 million.

Mill Quarter’s closure comes at a busy time for the local golf industry.

Independence Golf Club, also in Powhatan, recently sold to Northern Virginia-based Heritage Golf Properties for an undisclosed sum.

Magnolia Green Golf Club is for sale and has a contract pending with an unknown buyer, according to an online listing.

The Crossings Golf Club in Henrico was recently sold by the county to North Carolina-based McConnell Golf, which is planning a multimillion-dollar upgrade.

And over in Hanover, the Federal Club this week will host the Korn Ferry Tour Championship, a new-to-town tournament that will be played Oct. 8-11.
