Charlotte City Council considering ways to make it more difficult for predatory towing companies to operate

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte City Council is working to make it harder for predatory towing companies to operate in the Queen City. On Monday, council’s Safety Committee discussed ways to strengthen current ordinances. One possible change would require towing companies to get written permission from private property owners before they tow, any time of day. Right now that requirement is only in place between seven AM and seven PM.

City Council member Dante Anderson says, “Overall, this is not an indictment of the towing industry. But there are bad actors. We’ve seen the stories of our residents being charged $1,100 and upwards of towing that has been predatory.”

Under state law, the city cannot prevent towing companies from operating, or regulate how much they charge.
